Immersion in Colour

Perhaps a reaction to the prolonged snow and monochromatic world outside. Inspired by the steep sided and history laden Glen Sannox, Isle of Arran, “Knowledge doesn’t dispel mystery” is my first painting of 2026.

The watercolour invites us to lean in and walk amongst the stories held between the enveloping walls of the glen.

Nan Shepherd, in Living Mountain, said "Knowledge doesn’t dispel mystery”. Glen Sannox, carved by ice through granite and mined for Barytes holds many stories and memories. I have chosen this quate as the title because it speaks to the idea that knowing the geology and history only adds to the beauty and sense of awe.

The Barytes mines operated in the 1840s and reopened briefly after WW1. The white mineral was used as a filler in the paper industry.
